Barton Clough’s life savers

A visit to the local park after school prompted three pupils from Barton Clough Primary School in Stretford to put their first aid training into immediate action.

Yobel, a Year 6 pupil with diabetes, collapsed and suffered a seizure during the trip. His quick-thinking friends, Ismail, Zaki and Nathaniel, sprang into action, ensuring Yobel was cared for while also alerting a nearby adult to call emergency services.

Yobel was taken to the hospital for treatment but was eager to return to school the following day, feeling much better.

Nathaniel explained: “I really wanted to help Yobel because he is my friend, and friends should always help each other. I was really concerned about him because I wasn’t entirely sure what was going to happen. I wanted to make sure the paramedics knew everything about him so they could help him.”

Mr Foster-Carr, Principal at Barton Clough which is part of Bright Futures Educational Trust, said: “We are incredibly proud of the boys for putting their training into practice, showing great care for their friend, and making sure that Yobel received the help that he needed.

“At Barton Clough, we’re committed to teaching our pupils life lessons, which include increasing their confidence and readiness to respond to real-life emergencies. All Year 5 and 6 pupils participate in Safety Week, a school-led initiative that provides valuable training including first aid, fire safety and railway safety.”

First aid training encourages children to be self-reliant and empowers them with invaluable skills to help themselves and others in medical emergencies. Children love the practical nature of this learning which they will turn to throughout their lives.

The school friends were recognised for their bravery at a special assembly, where they received certificates and were celebrated for their actions.
