Sam Collard from Cedar Mount Academy (CMA) has been recognised with a Silver Award for ‘Outstanding New Teacher of the Year’ in this year’s Pearson National Teaching Awards. Chosen from thousands of nominees, he will now be in with the chance of winning the highly desired Gold Award, which will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in London and on BBC One’s The One Show later this year.
Appearing on BBC Breakfast, a delighted Sam said: “Teaching is a very selfless career; everything we do is for the children and I believe that to be a good teacher you have to care. At the start of every lesson I welcome all students and shake each of their hands – because we are a family.
“I fondly remember a teacher who inspired me during a difficult time. Miss Provost supported and encouraged me to do what I love by giving me the lead role in the school play. From that moment on, in Year 9, I have never looked back.”
Sarah Schollar, Executive Leader at CMA, said: “We are so happy that Sam has been recognised in this way. He joined Cedar Mount at the start of this academic year and is a second-year Early Career Teacher (ECT), teaching Dance, PE and Maths. With an abundance of charisma and magnetism, Sam has quickly become a favourite among students, who absolutely love his lessons.
“Sam has completely transformed the subject of Dance and has worked hard to develop the curriculum while adapting his lessons to provide a fully inclusive environment. He brings the same energy and enthusiasm to Maths, making the subject engaging and fun through his expressive teaching style. Sam has also taken on the role of the school’s Transition Lead, where he visits local primary schools to teach Dance and PE.”
Sam is one of 93 deserving teachers, lecturers, leaders, support staff and institutions recognised as a silver winner in this year’s awards for the lasting impact they have on shaping the lives of children and young people.
The announcement follows tributes from celebrities, students and schools across the UK as they say thank you to all those who work in education to mark National Thank a Teacher Day.
Celebrating the whole education community, National Thank a Teacher Day and the Pearson National Teaching Awards are run by the Teaching Awards Trust, an independent charity established over 25 years ago to celebrate the transformative impact of education, shining a spotlight on the pivotal roles teachers, support staff, colleges, schools and early years educators play in inspiring children and young people, every single day.
Sir Michael Morpurgo, author, former Children’s Laureate, and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, says:
“The dedication and impact of those involved in educating young people is truly remarkable. Their influence extends well beyond the classroom – offering encouragement, inspiration, and unwavering support that can shape lives for years to come. That’s why National Thank a Teacher Day is an important opportunity to pause and celebrate all that they do.
“I’m also delighted to be able to congratulate this year’s Silver Award winners. Your passion and commitment to shaping the next generation is extraordinary. Thank you for the difference you make every single day.”

“I’ve experienced first-hand how a great teacher can make all the difference. Teachers don’t just deliver lessons – they transform lives, inspire curiosity, and build the confidence our children need to succeed. For this incredible commitment to our nation’s future, we owe our teachers our deepest gratitude.”
Krissi Murison, Deputy Editor, The Sunday Times, Sponsor of the Award for Outstanding New Teacher says: “New teachers are a vital force within our education system, bringing fresh energy, dedication, and innovative thinking to every classroom they enter.
